From 2011 - 2013 Mr Holmes completed his Diploma then in 2014 he completed his Bachelor of Technology in Human Resource Management.
Where have you worked?
In 2007 he started at ABSA Cash Solutions.
Where are you currently working?
He is currently the Client Liaison Officer at Barclays Africa (ABSA Cash Solutions).
How did your studies prepare you for the workplace?
"I studied part-time and worked full-time. So I had good foundation in terms of work. I would say that my studies built on what I was already experiencing in the workplace, although I don’t currently work in the HR field it has equipped me with so much confidence, knowledge and skill to be able to operate at a professional level. The practical and hands-on approach prepared me to handle many different situations, as HR is a field that basically forms a firm bond between all aspects of a business. And this contributed immensely to how I approach situations and how I contribute to the organisation."
What was the most valuable thing you learnt while studying?
"I have had many valuable lessons learnt from studying. I learned how to work independently, how to compromise and work in a team. I have learned how to think out of the box, how to be stern, I was taught how to speak in public, presenting to a group. How to manage my time effectively as I was working full time and something I will always be cognisant of and that is the importance of work life balance. "
Do you have any advice for the current students?
Advice to current students who will enter the working world would be to build your brand. From the moment you make your first contact with any company, make sure that it is a lasting impression. Build your own brand by always acting in a professional manner, always present yourself well (grooming), stand for what you believe in, always be ethical in your practice (especially HR), be confident and always be punctual. These may be small things taken for granted but in the working world these are things that might distinguish you from the rest. Take advantage of opportunities, go the extra mile and be informed. Do not settle to be mediocre.
Work hard to achieve outstanding results academically, also present yourself in a manner that will not compromise you. Sacrifice these few years to study and achieve in order to have a lifetime of success.
